It probably goes without saying that our road networks are a source of great frustration to businesses and residents alike. Every week it seems there are stories in the local media about road closures through road works or accidents, both of which add time and money to journeys.
One of the worst affected seems to be the Dartford Crossing and the surrounding areas and we therefore welcome the proposals from Highways England to construct a third Lower Thames Crossing, which we fully support. The formal consultation on this scheme has now started and you can find details of the information meetings being held plus the project website elsewhere in this edition. Whatever your views on the project we would urge you to take the time to find out more.
Sticking with the transport theme Stansted Airport have applied to Uttlesford District Council for planning consent to increase the number of passengers per annum that use the airport. Although the Government is prioritising a third runway at Heathrow we support the ambitions of Manchester Airports Group to grow Stansted as it has much more to offer air passengers in the UK than just being a regional airport. We will be taking part in a public session of the council’s planning committee supporting the airport.
Earlier this year we formally established a Business Crime Strategic Board in collaboration with the Chief Constable of Essex, B J Harrington, and the Police Fire and Crime Commissioner, Roger Hirst.
The Board recently had its’ first meeting and following on from that our Chief Executive, Denise Rossiter, took the Chief Constable to meet a variety of Chamber members large and small across the county. A programme of further meetings will be held in 2019 and we will keep you updated with this new initiative as it develops. In the meantime notes from the Board meetings will be published on our website for anyone to read.
We continue to work with the British Chambers of Commerce at national level and to lobby MPs on topics affecting you as members. If you have anything you want to raise please email me at email@example.com
